Sample Script Anna's Violin

Dave angles to where the dogs are chained to the tree, straining to attack.

Red slides to a halt in the snow twenty yards from the bear. The bear charges for him and the chains of the trap tighten. Red aims and shoots the bear in the stomach. The bear CRIES OUT. Red drops to a knee to reload. The bear keeps charging despite the chain’s hold.

Dave struggles with releasing the dogs.

OLD DAVE
Damn it!

Red packs the gun quickly as the bear roars.


C.U: STAKE PULLING OUT OF THE GROUND

One of the support stakes for the trap leans towards where the bear is pulling.

INT: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

Bluebird holds onto John.

BLUEBIRD
I am sorry, John. You must stay.

LITTLE JOHN’S P.O.V: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

John sees the silver –plated .50 caliber rifle near the door.

LITTLE JOHN
The rifle! Dave forgot his rifle!

INT: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

John struggles free and runs to the rifle, grabs it, and flees out the door.

BLUEBIRD
John!

Bluebird chases him out the door.

EXT: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

The bear ROARS as the stake comes loose, turning up dirt and snow. Another chain breaks and whips upon the ground. The bear has broken free of the trap and charges just as Red stands to aim.

The bear strikes Red and the gun fires up into the air. Red is separated from his gun and lands twenty feet away unconscious.

EXT: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

John runs barefoot in the snow wearing only his long underwear and shirt as he approaches the scene.

EXT: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

The bear advances on the dazed Red who unknowingly is moving in pain.

Dave releases the dogs who charge toward the bear, BARKING. They attack the bear from behind.

The bear turns to the sound and catches a dog mid-leap. The bear bites clear through the dog and bats the other two away as if they were gnats.

John runs into the backyard.

LITTLE JOHN P.O.V: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

John views the scene. He sees the bear, Red on the ground, and looks down to the rifle, checking to see if it’s loaded.

EXT: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

John races toward the bear. Dave sees him.

OLD DAVE
No Johnny!

The bear towers over the dazed Red. John runs across the bear’s line of sight.

The bear ROARS at John with black eyes.

John lifts the heavy rifle and struggles to aim.

The bear ROARS.

John FIRES the rifle. It kicks him backward rolling into a tree.

LITTLE JOHN’S P.O.V: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

John’s vision is blurred. CRUNCHING SNOW from running footsteps can be heard.

BLUEBIRD
(muted as if from John’s ears)
John! John!

EXT: DAVE’S CABIN—MORNING

Bluebird holds John close to her.

BLUEBIRD
John! John!


LITTLE JOHN
Red! He’s eatin’ Red!

Dave runs to them.

OLD DAVE
No, he ain’t. You got the son-of the-bitch!
(to Bluebird)
Jesus Christ woman, let him go before you
smother him to death!
